Thunderbird raconte l’ancienne légende d’un temple commandité par le souverain sumérien Gudea et dédié au dieu Ningirsu et à son avatar le Thunderbird, une créature hybride magique avec le corps d’un aigle et la tête d’un lion. La légende dit que les dieux auraient envoyé une vision divine à Gudea, un rêve qui lui aurait inspiré la construction du temple. Actuellement, le site archéologique du temple est le terrain de recherche du « programme irakien » du British Museum, dirigé par l’archéologue Sebastien Rey. Sa mission est de formerdes archéologues irakiens et des spécialistes internationaux aux techniques et technologies de l’archéologie de sauvetage. Au cours des dernières années, le Dr Rey et Christine Rebet ont dialogué et partagé leurs recherches mutuelles afin de permettre des interprétations symboliques autour de ce temple.
En réponse à la destruction et au pillage des derniers grands sites archéologiques du Moyen-Orient, Christine Rebet anime ce mythe divin inscrit sur d’anciens piliers en terre cuite découverts dans la région.
« Lorsque j’évoque l’écriture sumérienne, c’est aussi parce que cette écriture est faite d’images, comme si les mots étaient d’autres signes de l’insconscient et que je remontais leur trace à rebours. »
The film Thunderbird is about Girsu, one of the earliest cities known to mankind. Sumerian Prince Gudea ordered the construction of the city and many temples after dreamingof Thunderbird, the god Ningirsu’s lion-headed and winged avatar.
“The myth is revisited in an almost hypnotic way by Christine Rebet, whose moving images seem to bring the ancientcity back to life. In her ink drawings on paper, the artist accompanies her symbolic representations with analysesby archaeologist Sébastien Rey, with whom she has worked for several years. Dr Rey is the head archaeologist of the“Iraq Scheme” initiative at the British Museum in London, which aims to train some fifty Iraqi archaeologists in the most advanced exploration and preservation techniques. From the excavation campaign, Rebet has retrieved sound and visual recordings, including the photograph that closes her film: the hands of the (Franco-Syrian) scientist presenting a brick found on-site, offering the artist the last stone of her opus. Like an allegory of the ancient rite of the first brick and the current process of sustainable reconstruction.”
